PYLON

Night football in pixels. Drag back to throw, juke the tackler whose shadow lunges first, then call the defence and time the hit yourself.

What it is

throw it, then hit them

PYLON is arcade American football under floodlights, with a front office between games. You coach one of the Floodlight League's four worst clubs. On offence you pick one of three play cards, snap, and drag back from anywhere to throw: the pull sets the distance, a dotted chalk arc shows the flight, and how much of the arc you can see is your quarterback's accuracy. The carrier runs forward on his own while you juke, stutter, dive or truck, and every tackler's shadow streaks to where he will land a moment before he dives. When the other club has the ball its drive plays on the field at four times speed: you call BLITZ, ZONE or MAN, and on the deciding snap a ring closes on your best defender, so you tap as it meets and a perfect tap is an interception you run back. Between games: a presser, level-ups, injuries, one news card, and a front office of facilities, coordinators, free agents, trades, the cap and a three-round draft. Sixteen clubs, fifteen games and a bye, then the top four of each conference play for the Lantern.

  1. The pull sets how far the ball goes, up to your quarterback's arm. A second finger, a right-click or Shift turns the lob into a bullet: faster and flatter, but a lineman in its path bats it down.

  2. A pass is settled where it lands. A defender inside the landing spot and closer than your man picks it; one at its edge tips it up, and a tap makes your man dive for it.

  3. When the landing spot pulses, the ball is contested: tap as it arrives and your receiver goes up for it.

  4. A tackler's shadow streaks to where he will land about 0.3 seconds before he leaves his feet, and he never changes course. Juke off the streak, or stutter and let him overshoot.

  5. Hold to truck: you slow down, but a star breaks one tackle a carry. A fumble only ever comes from two tacklers at once or a trucked hit, and the ball blinks red first.

  6. On defence BLITZ beats a running club and loses to quick passes, ZONE beats deep passes and loses to the run, MAN beats quick passes and loses to the deep ball. The matchup card names each club's style.

  7. The red ring round your quarterback is the pocket: it shrinks from the side that is losing, and a better line holds it longer.

  8. Throw to the same receiver's route three times and his defender starts leaning on it, then jumps it. Spread the ball around.

  9. Inside the fourth quarter's second half, within one score, the floods drop to a follow-spot. A play still live at 0:00 shows pitch rings on the teammates behind the carrier: tap one to lateral.

  10. Fans move with your margin against the line on the matchup card, so a close loss as the underdog still wins fans. Each game pays up to 3 Clout from the fan meter.

  11. Difficulty is seven lamps. They change how smart the other side plays, never anyone's ratings. Win the Lantern at a lamp to light the next.
