The Perils of You

Each chapter cuts away at the worst moment. Type what you do; the Narrator marks your words and rules.

What it is

write your way out

A film serial where you're the hero. Every chapter stops at the worst moment: you type exactly what you do, and the Narrator rules it on four checks (THREAT, MEANS, TIME, DETAIL), marks the words that saved or killed you, and shows you the way out. Sixty hand-written chapters in six serials are judged free by a local judge in your browser, the same way every time; a daily Matinee gives everyone the same three. The hub AI writes new chapters without end and judges them the same way. Modes: Serials, Matinee, One Life, Marathon, Nitrate (against the clock) and Villain, where you write the trap.

How to play

Controls, then the numbers that matter

TYPECTRL+ENTERSPACEESC1–6
  1. The HUD shows each chapter's bar before you type: bar 1 wants THREAT and MEANS, bar 4 all four checks with nothing to cover a miss. In One Life the chapter number is the difficulty, and the difficulty sets the bar.

  2. Each chapter has a word window, 74 words at difficulty 1 down to 38 at difficulty 10, a floor of 10 words at bar 1 up to 16 at bar 4 (the HUD reads 10–74 WORDS), and a number of steps (UP TO 4 STEPS). Under the floor, DETAIL fails; words past the window are struck through and never read.

  3. FLAIR, a clever use of the scene, covers one missed TIME or DETAIL at bar 3. A clean print (every check passed, 60% of the window or less) adds half again to the seats.

  4. Sixty house chapters are judged free and the same way every time, against 972 test plans, every chapter's own way out among them. APPEAL sends a local death to the hub AI for one credit.

  5. Nitrate gives you time to read the card first (the leader starts with the card on screen), then a fuse of 34 − 1.2 × chapter seconds, never under 22; when it runs out, a plan of three words or more goes in as it stands and TIME says the fuse ran out.

  6. A new AI chapter costs about 1⅓ credits: one call writes three chapters, one judges each. Talking to the Narrator instead of acting is CUT on your own machine, for nothing.

  7. The Cutting Room's Lessons page marks the ways out of each house chapter you have found and whether you made a clean print of it, and reruns any of them you have seen. A rerun never moves your place in a serial, and today's Matinee chapters rerun only after the Matinee.

  8. The Matinee keeps a ledger on the Cutting Room's Record page: the matinees you have seen, your full houses, your best seats and your longest run of days. A day you miss takes nothing away.

    What changed

    1. new

      StuStudios 2.2

      • The Perils of You now keeps a Matinee ledger on the Cutting Room’s Record page, and the Lessons page reruns any house chapter you have seen.

    2. polish

The Perils of You: every chapter, lit

      • Every picture in The Perils of You is now lit like a tinted film print: moonlight on the snow and the water, a lamp over the room, the fire throwing its own light, with shafts, shadows and grain, and still in one colour per reel. Each chapter’s title card now opens on its picture, and the Programme shows the opening shot of today’s Matinee.
    3. fixed

The Perils of You: the picture after typing on a phone

      • In The Perils of You on an Android phone, the picture above your marked plan and the verdict came back zoomed in on a corner after you typed; it now stays the picture you saw while you read.
    4. new

The Perils of You: a serial with you in peril

      • What Would You Do? comes back as The Perils of You, a silent film serial with you as its hero. Every chapter stops at the worst moment; you type exactly what you do, and the Narrator rules it on four checks, threat, means, time and detail, strikes through the words that would have killed you and shows you the way out. Sixty hand-written chapters in six serials are judged in your browser, the same way every time, so you can play them signed out; signed in, the hub AI writes new chapters without end. Modes: Serials, a daily Matinee everyone shares, One Life, Marathon, Nitrate against the clock, and Villain, where you write the trap.
